For the novice sailors, the Optimist basic and evolution 1 courses take place at the Spaarbekken in Nieuwpoort. We start every day at 9h and finish at 17h.

On this beautiful and large body of water, located behind the lock complex, they can learn the first tricks of sailing. In groups of 8, children learn how to rig and manoeuvre their small boat, an Optimist, under the supervision of a certified instructor.

To get a first experience in a passenger boat, the traineeship in a Caravelle is a good way to start. With 3 to 4 other youngsters and the instructor you are in the same boat and get the hang of sailing with others.

After the necessary experience on the spaarbekken, our young sailors head out to sea. The KYCN Sailing Academy has 9 two-man boats available: 5 RS Feva and 4 Laser Vago.

In addition to rigging up, launching and manoeuvring the boat as a team, the youngsters learn how to take account of currents, what to do if you capsize, what measures to take against hypothermia and so on. This is done under the guidance of certified instructors who follow them at sea in a motorboat.
