DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 PRIZEGIVING SAILORS BAR INSTALLATION

From August 5 to 9, 2024, the In Advance Half Ton Classics Cup took place at the Royal Yacht Club Nieuwpoort (KYCN). This event, hosted by our club for the fifth time, was marked by exciting races, changing weather conditions, and impressive performances from the participating teams.

Race Highlights

The first race day began with light winds, leading to the initial cancellation of the planned windward-leeward race. Participants had to be patient until the wind stabilized somewhat. Eventually, the fleet was able to start a 8-mile round-the-cans race along the coast of Nieuwpoort. The Irish 2Farr, with Robert O'Leary at the helm, dominated this race, finishing over two minutes ahead of Red Cloud, helmed by our own Tom Florizoone. King One, steered by Norway's Espen Kamperhaug, impressed by finishing third despite an early start.

The rest of the week presented challenging weather conditions, with gusts of wind creating exciting moments on the water. Despite these challenges, the sailors demonstrated their skills in both short, intense windward-leeward races and longer offshore races.

Participants and Results

The competition attracted 27 boats from seven countries, with strong representations from Norway, France, Ireland, and, of course, Belgium. Our club members performed excellently: Tom Florizoone (Red Cloud), Jan-Jacob Muyls (Farther Bruyn), Ian Van Burm (Fantasy), Thibaut Martin (Spip), Thomas Janquart (Big Picture), and Winnie Berteloot (SeaYou3) proudly defended the KYCN burgee.

Notably, there was strong participation from women's teams, including the Belgian A+ led by Ann Callens and the Norwegian Midnight X, manned by an all-female crew. These teams delivered impressive performances and showcased the diversity and inclusivity of the sport of sailing.

After five days of intense competition, the final standings were determined. Red Cloud (the Florizoone Family) emerged as the overall winner of the event.

In addition to the main prizes, special distinctions were awarded, including the True Half Ton Spirit Trophy, given to the team that best embodied the spirit of the Half Ton class.

The Royal Yacht Club Nieuwpoort would like to thank all participants, volunteers, and supporters who made this event possible. Thanks to your enthusiasm and dedication, the In Advance Half Ton Classics Cup 2024 was a great success. We are already looking forward to welcoming you back to Nieuwpoort for the next edition.
